Last month, I got to update y'all on my first spin flight. Yesterday, I got my second and final one done! This was an amazing experience, especially because I got to use both aircraft that UND has to use for spins. For my first flight, I used the Cessna Skyhawk which was a great throwback to my private pilot training I did in the same aircraft. This flight, I got to use the Decathlon for the first time ever. This was my first time ever being in a tailwheel or acrobatic airplane. This was also my first time in a two-seater aircraft (besides a gyrocopter). My spin instructor was great, and helped me talk through what I needed to do. By the end of the flight, I was teaching spin entry and recovery to him as a simulated student.
Once we got everything in the lesson plan done, I got to experience something even more fun. We had a little extra time in the airplane, so my instructor showed me some acrobatic maneuvers. We did loops, rolls, something called a "hammerhead", and went upside down. The Decathlon has a glass ceiling too, so I got to look at the ground through the ceiling. When my instructor told me on the ground to make sure my hip seatbelt was secure, I definitely should have listened better. While we were upside down, I was hanging out of my seat a little more than I would prefer. It was awesome to watch my braids flip around and touch the ceiling too. This flight was super fun, and a great reminder of why I love aviation so much!
